Children's Programs at Highland Presbyterian Church

Highland Presbyterian Church has a strong commitment to the growth, education and spiritual nourishment of our children.  It is through the children that we see the future – not only of this church family, but Christ’s Church as well.  As we minister to our children, we always keep in mind the words found in Proverb 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart form it.”  Christ loves our children and calls upon each of us to extend that love, remembering that our children are our greatest legacy.

Wednesday Activities Kick-Off Will Resume September 8, 2010

What are children’s Programs?
The children’s programs are all activities, both educational and recreational, designed for children. This includes ongoing activities and special events. The dates and times vary depending on the  activity.

What age Children participate in these programs?

Children in Pre-K through 5th grade participate in the children’s activities. The offerings vary depending on the age group, so it is important that you pay careful attention to age requirements for each event/activity.

Nursery (Birth - Kindergarden)
The Children's Ministry of Highland provides a nursery program during Sunday School and Sunday Worship Services (8:45 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.). The purpose of our nursery program is to minister to families of small children. Our nurseries are staffed by paid and volunteer workers who want to share God's love with our children and their parents.  If you have questions about the nursery program, call Georgeanna English, Director of Children's Ministry (910-485-2147). Children 2 and up are grouped according to their age as of October 15th.

Jesus said, “Whoever humbles himself like this child is the
greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”  (Matthew 18:4)

Acolytes for Worship
Third Grade children may participate in the Worship Service by lighting the candles on the altar. This is a special opportunity for the children of our church to participate in the life of the church. If your child would like to train to be an acolyte, contact Georgeanna English  at 485-2591.

FUNdamentals of Worship
Changes are underway for our FUNdamentals of Worship class. Until we put the finishing touches on our plan, 2nd graders will return to their seats with their parents after the Children’s Moment. Parents of 2nd graders should look for information regarding FUNdamentals of Worship to arrive in your homes in early September. We think you’ll be pleased with the changes. For information, contact Georgeanna English at 485-2147, or e-mail gbebanana@aol.com.

Children's Sermons
We believe that sermons are an essential part of the church's ministry, especially for children. Each Sunday, we invite the children to move forward to the Chancel steps for "their message." Our hope is that these are more than simple object lessons, but illustrate that God's love is exciting and real and that children have a significant part in the sharing of that love. If you are interested in sharing a message with our children, contact Georgeanna English at 485-2147, or e-mail gbebanana@aol.com

Cherub Choir - Sundays
We think there is nothing sweeter than little ones singing praises to God! Each Sunday, Mrs. Connie meets with 3 and 4 year olds from 9:55am -10:10am in the Children’s Choir room for Cherub Choir. The children learn songs that they will share in worship services throughout the year. Following Cherub Choir, the children are escorted to their SONday School class by their teachers.

Catechism -   Wednesdays
The Catechism program has a longstanding history here at Highland, and one of which we are quite proud! Fifth and sixth graders who haven’t already done so participate in this program that teaches the basics of our Christian beliefs and is an integral part of our Christian Education Curriculum. It prepares them as they move towards church membership and a profession of faith. This year, Catechism will meet on Wednesdays at 3:45pm-4:45pm. Children who are eligible for this class will receive more detailed information on the class. Contact Georgeanna English (485-2147) if you have any questions about this program.
