Dr.
J. Ernest Johnson

Dr. Johnson (Ernie) is a native of Chattanooga,
Tennessee. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from
the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, and received his
Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary. In
1983 he was awarded the Doctor of Ministry degree from
McCormick Theological Seminary. Dr. Johnson has served
churches in Greensboro, North Carolina, Rock Hill, South
Carolina and Atlanta, Ga. Prior to coming to Highland
Presbyterian as Senior Pastor in 1990 he was the Senior
Associate at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta.

Dr. Johnson has served churches in Greensboro, North

Prior to coming to Highland Presbyterian as Senior
Pastor in 1990 he was the Senior Associate at
Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta.
Dr. Johnson has
served on the Board of Visitors at Presbyterian
College, Clinton, S. C. and the Board of Visitors at
St. Andrews College in Laurinburg, N. C. He is the
former Chairman of the Judicial Commission for the
Presbytery of Coastal Carolina. In 1995 under Dr.
Ernie Johnson's leadership, the Highland Congregation
adopted a Master Plan for church expansion. In the
Spring of 1999, a Committee of Twelve was established
by the Session to move forward with drafting plans for
expanding the church facility. In the fall of 2003,
the new church facility (housing the Highland Learning
Center, Sunday School Classrooms and a Gym) was
completed. The Highland Learning Center, which has in
the past provided quality programs for preschool
children, has been expanded to include a Montessori
Program. The Highland Recreation Ministry and the
Highland School of the Performing Arts are now
offering a variety of educational, arts and
recreational opportunities to families. The Highland
family of faith continues to demonstrate that they are
always looking for new ways to share the good news of
Jesus Christ and that the doors of Highland Church are
always open as an invitation to any and all to come
and join the journey.
While in
Fayetteville, Dr. Johnson has been active in the
affairs of the community, serving as Chair of
MetroVision, a community based visioning and strategic
planning team of citizens. He has also
helped shape the BRIDGES II Family Resource Center
through its board of directors. He served on the Board
of The Tally Leadership School, A Complete
Fayetteville Once And For All, Fayetteville United and
The Chamber of Commerce. He was selected Chamber of
Commerce Outstanding Member in 1993 and in 1999
received the Greater Good Award for community service
from the Center of Entrepreneurship at Methodist
College.
Dr. Johnson is
married to Connie who teaches music in the Cumberland
County Schools. and serves as Director of Children's
Music Ministries at
Highland. Dr. and Mrs. Johnson have two grown
sons, Paul and Will.
