Week 2: Follow the Leader

June 6, 2021
Primary Text: Mark 3:20–35
Supplementary Texts: 1 Samuel 8:4–11, 16–20; Psalm 138; 2 Corinthians 4:13–5:1
Topic(s): Insanity, Family, Will of God
Big Idea of the Message: Jesus’s family thinks he’s crazy, and they miss the fact that he is seeking to add more members to his family: those who will do the will of God.
Application Point: Follow Christ in his “crazy” actions, and seek to do his will in the world.

Jesus looked weird by doing the things he was doing. He even looked weird to those who knew him best. And yet, those who get it, those who see the importance of Jesus’s work, are family. They are as close as they can possibly be to the one who is saving the world, even if the methods look crazy. And when you’re a part of God’s family, you’ll look insane too. But it’s worth it.

Discussion Questions:
  • What is one thing that stood out to you from this week’s message?
  • How much controversy shows up in your family? What sorts of things bring about controversy?
  • If someone is acting “out of their mind” in your family, how would you try to communicate with them about that?
  • Have you ever felt like you were the only sane person, surrounded by people who don’t get it? What was that situation like for you?
  • Has anyone brought you into their family? How did that feel?
  • Close your time together in prayer.
