Hunkered Down Devotion

Luke 12:2-3 (Voice)
2 Nothing is covered up that won’t be discovered; nothing is hidden that won’t be exposed. 3 Whatever a person says in the dark will be published in the light of day, and whatever a person whispers in private rooms will be broadcast from the housetops.

The passage today is a short one, just two verses, so take a moment and read it again.  If I had to come up with a single word to describe this passage, it might be this: terrifying.  I mean, can you imagine it, all the things that we think and say in the dark corners of our lives exposed for all to see in the harsh light of day.

Would we have any friends?  Would we have jobs?  Would anyone want or be able to look us in the eye?  I mean, of course I don’t say anything I don’t wany you to know – and you don’t either…. But other people…. You know, those other people, they would be absolutely terrified for their whispers to be ‘broadcast from the housetops’.

What can be done to make this situation a little less terrifying?  Yesterday, if you were reading along with us we talked about ‘cleaning the inside of our cups’ and that is a good place to start.  If we are working regularly on making sure that we are filling our hearts and minds with God’s Holy Spirit and allowing him to cleanse, renew and restore us then we are less likely to be whispering things publicly or privately that we might regret.

Another good way to minimize the fear and danger of what might happen when our ‘hidden’ conversations inevitably become public is to follow the apostle Paul’s advice given first to the church in Philippi, found in Philippians 4:8-9: Finally, brothers and sisters, fill your minds with beauty and truth. Meditate on whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is good, whatever is virtuous and praiseworthy. 9 Keep to the script: whatever you learned and received and heard and saw in me—do it—and the God of peace will walk with you.

Our God sees what is done in secret, and knows the inmost workings of our hearts and minds, and loves us still.  Let us lean on him and the strength, wisdom, and guidance of the Holy Spirit to as we seek to live a life that can withstand the scrutiny of the light that is sure to come.

Sharing God’s Love,
Chip

Prayer: Lord, help us to live by your light and in your light.  Amen.
