Hunkered Down Devotion

Mark 4:21-23 (Voice)
Jesus: 21 When you bring a lamp into the house, do you put it under a box or stuff it under your bed? Or do you set it on top of a table or chest? 22 Those things that are hidden are meant to be revealed, and what is concealed is meant to be brought out where its light can shine.  23 All who have ears to hear, let them listen.

I am a bit of a night owl.  I always have been, I think I was still in elementary school when my mom pretty much gave up on enforcement of a bedtime for me because I just couldn’t seem to sleep.  So, now, in our house, I am almost always the last one awake.  This means that I usually have the responsibility for going through the house and making sure all the lights are off in bathrooms, that none of the boys have fallen asleep with a lamp on in their room, or that one of us hasn’t left a candle burning somewhere in the house.

Even though I go through this routine on a nightly basis, it is always surprising to me just how much light, how much brightness and luminosity can come from one lamp, candle, or lightbulb.  It is amazing just how much work one little light can do.

Jesus Christ, and the saving love that we have in and through his incarnate love we all have access to the light of the world.  He is something so much brighter, stronger, purer, and stronger than a regular lamp or light.   So just like none of us would ever think to place our lamps or candles under our couches.

The fancy, wonderful smelling Yankee Candles are just expensive decorations that can’t serve their intended purpose, if you don’t take their lid off.   The light and love of God we have in and through Jesus Christ is meant to shone brightly for all to see.

Sharing God’s Love
Chip

Prayer: Lord, help us to share the light of your love as it shines brightly in our lives and in our world.  Amen.
